How to Choose a Care Manager in the New Year

Happy belated 2021! Though many of us have witnessed unprecedented changes in the past year, both in our own lives and others’, the need for a compassionate, knowledgeable care manager never ceases. On the contrary, when things get rocky, when the future becomes uncertain, a skilled care manager can make one’s life significantly easier. There are many considerations involved in choosing the right care manager for you or your loved one. Here are few tips to help guide your decision:

  • Think about the specific needs you or your loved one might have in a care environment (i.e., home care services, emergency availability, medical advice, guidance in applying for insurance, etc.). Does the care management company in question provide this?
  • Consider how you or your loved one communicates. You should feel a connection with your care manager, and that they listen to you.
  • How much are you able to pay for care management services? Be sure to investigate pricing options and if the company in question aligns with your financial situation.
  • Do you prefer to interact with a larger, integrated company, or a smaller, independent team of care managers? Consider whether the company in question is accountable to a parent company or not. Independent operations are usually better equipped to provide personalized care because their primary concern is not meeting a quota, but rather the wellbeing of you or your loved one.
